With 50 years in the game as a cricket writer for The Times, the voice of TMS and latterly author and speaker at events across the country, Henry is perfectly placed to comment on the sweeping changes the game has experienced.
The June event in Barnsley is billed as ‘a charming journey through modern cricket, while looking back at the great games of yesteryear’.
The professional game has evolved at startling speed with more formats, franchises and competitions that jostle for attention in a packed calendar. Blowers reflects both on how cricket used to be and where it is headed.
Cricket’s nostalgia and change
Inspired by his new book Sharing My Love of Cricket: Playing the Game and Spreading the Word, Blofeld discusses the traditions and characters that have defined cricket, sprinkled with anecdotes, warmth and wit.
Up for discussion are the seismic shifts the game continues to experience and how it retains its broad appeal. Is there a place for both nostalgia and change? What will that look like in the next five, 10 or 50 years?
An Audience with Henry Blofeld promises to be an unforgettable night, part of a packed programme at the iconic Barnsley Civic; an arts venue at the heart of the South Yorkshire town’s cultural life for 150 years.

Nowadays, it’s Barnsley Woolley Miners CC whose first team play in the Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League. There’s also the Barnsley & District Cricket League with four divisions that demonstrates the breadth of the game locally.
Ralph Parmar, Head of Marketing & Communications for Barnsley Civic said: “Henry Blofeld is an iconic voice in cricket storytelling, and his visit connects perfectly with Barnsley’s rich sporting heritage. Hosting him at Barnsley Civic gives us the chance to present an event that blends sporting passion with captivating personal stories.”
He added: “With local legend Dickie Bird hailing from Barnsley, there’s a deep sense of pride and history around cricket in the town. We’re always looking to broaden our cultural programme, and this felt like the perfect fit; a chance for audiences to celebrate the sport, the stories, and the personalities that make it truly special.”
