Electronic cricket scoreboards come in all shapes and sizes and in this guide, in association with Bespoke Scoreboards, we’ll share some of the features, costs and next steps a club cricket volunteer needs to consider.
Electronic Cricket Scoreboards: Choosing for your club
If you are exploring what updating to an electronic cricket scoreboard involves then this is the place. It might be new digits, extra functionality like DLS, a new portable scoreboard or a custom installation.
We’ll lay out some of the choices but ultimately, it will come down to size and features when you buy a cricket scoreboard and what your cricket club’s budget is.
Easy-to-read displays at a distance and rich detail for umpires, players and spectators is crucial so anyone can follow the twists and turns of a club game every over. It might sound daft but scoreboards for cricket often form part of the overall appeal of a ground too, adding to its character.
Let’s kick off with sizes of scoreboards then outline some of the features, costs and next steps.

What type of scoreboard suits your ground?
Let’s start with upgrading a custom cricket scoreboard – the overwhelming choice for most cricket clubs who already have one that needs updating or replacing entirely.
That’s an existing scoreboard usually integrated into a building. The decision for any cricket club committee is: Just servicing, adding digits and adapting or a more comprehensive refit.
Bespoke Scoreboards’ reputation has seen them install their scoreboards at clubs across Yorkshire and the rest of the country. Here are scoreboard examples to show you different styles – you’ll recognise some clubs!
Each job is unique in terms of what detail is on the scoreboard but also the space available to house it and other on-site challenges there might be. Old Sharlston’s fitted into the apex of the clubhouse, New Farnley opted for added elements such as DLS Par, target and required rate.
These electronic scoreboard case studies and testimonials illustrate that there’s a Yorkshire-based family business who gets the thumbs-up time and again.

Wall-mounted options or those affixed to a trolley to be moved come in a variety of sizes – a medium-sized scoreboard can be 15 to 22 digits with batters’ totals, score, overs, wickets and last innings.
If you want to buy a cricket scoreboard that’s got Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) then it needs to be a certain size to pack in all of the letters and displays. Indeed, some leagues mandate DLS for matches.
Do you need a portable cricket scoreboard? They can also be pushed on a trolley (see below), hung by handles or mounted on a wall. (Bespoke offer a small wireless scoreboard with control panel, power supply, connecting cables and the scoreboard display.)
These have 5 to 10 inch tall digits displaying total, wickets, overs and last innings and can act as a ‘repeater scoreboard’ showing what the main scoreboard has or used on its own.

Features to look for in an electronic scoreboard
Not all cricket scoreboards are easy to read, well-designed, have available parts if required and UK-based customer support. Apart from working itself, the scoreboard has to be able to ‘talk to’ whatever device the scorer is using during a match, be that a phone, tablet or laptop.
As electronics experts, Bespoke Scoreboards designed their own cricket scoreboard controllers that looks like a normal scoreboard for ease of use, complete with a strong case. These are common sights around Yorkshire club cricket! Here are some features to think about:
💡 Bright displays
⚡️ Reliable electronics
🔋 Long battery life
💥 Protection from damage
👏 Well-reviewed support
Wireless cricket scoreboards
Bespoke’s wireless system was honed over years and is very reliable. It is different to Wi-Fi (that doesn’t have long-range) and clubs won’t need Wi-Fi for their scoreboard to work. Its operating range has been measured at up to 400 metres in optimal conditions, so that’s comfortably far enough for even large cricket grounds.

Cricket scoreboards & Play-Cricket
Obviously, a scoreboard for a cricket club in England or Wales has to work with the ECB’s Play-Cricket to allow for the live-scoring of matches that can then be followed, in real-time, online.
Bespoke Scoreboards products work seamlessly with Play-Cricket Scorer (on phone or tablet), or Play-Cricket Scorer Pro (on laptop). Bespoke have designed a Play-Cricket Scorer Interface which acts as a bridge between scoreboard and the ECB’s scoring software.

Upgrading or replacing an existing scoreboard
Not everyone requires a new cricket scoreboard, it might just be a case of new digits, an adaptation like DLS or how to update your Daktronics scoreboard. Some clubs want a repeater scoreboard for other parts of their ground instead or require a portable cricket scoreboard for teams not on the main ground.
Replacement makes sense when there’s funding in place and the scoreboard isn’t delivering the experience your club wants. We have two examples of that from 2025 as Bespoke Scoreboards worked with Marsden Cricket Club to install a solar powered solution. Allerton Bywater’s scoreboard was a good example of fitting a scoreboard in a tight space.

Marsden Cricket Club go solar-powered!
Andy Sherrington explained how Marsden CC of the Huddersfield Premier Cricket League: “They (Bespoke) came to us to do a site visit. We were keen for it to be powered by solar. The challenge was there’s no electricity where the scoreboard was going.”
He added: “They came up with a good solution. It’s hassle-free and we won’t have to worry about electricity.”
Marsden Cricket Club wanted to retain the building and its look while some of it was rotting and needed a fix. So, the scope of the work included maintenance and also the installation of a solar-powered scoreboard.

Andy told me it’s a windy, exposed location (see above) and their covers were picked up and hurled 200m during one storm but the solar-powered scoreboard has had no such problems.
A team of three from Bespoke Scoreboards came to Marsden’s Mount Road address and through their experience at many clubs, had sketched plans of the project build.
“It was done in a day and ready for match day. David spent time training us how to use the scoreboard and set-up. I feel very protective of it now! The support is superb.”
At the end of the season, help was at hand on the phone with powering everything off and getting it ready for winter hibernation: “I’m not someone who’s technical so I rang them up and they were absolutely great. Clear instructions and all sorted!”
As for the future, Marsden has already signed some local players as it seeks to find those who want to contribute and feel more connected rather than just turning up to play.
They have a few new faces on the committee while Andy’s recruitment strategy is honing on juniors who aren’t getting games at Premiership level. He’s open-minded enough to know it’s a quid pro quo and they might move up a level at some point but it could suit everyone in the meantime.
All of this evolution was borne from a member questionnaire which also asked for scoreboard feedback: A very credible 4.7 / 5!

Scoreboard price and next steps
💡 Clubs might shop around for scoreboard suppliers and get quotes as products can cost anything from £1,500 to £8,000+. It depends on the size, complexity and features you need.
When it comes to a scoreboard price, clubs will want to save what they can but with something as essential as a working LED cricket scoreboard that will last for years, dealing with a local expert who answers your questions and comes to do a site visit is worth considering.
It sounds counter-intuitive to say but price shouldn’t be the only factor. Talking to clubs who have used Bespoke Scoreboards, their experience in cricket and the full service you’ll get from enquiry to aftersales are both factors. Behind the cheapest price may lurk a few inconvenient truths such as a lack of proper support, spare parts or help if electronics won’t work.

Contact Bespoke Scoreboards
In contrast, they do the electronics, make the scoreboard and can come and fit it for you, as well as offering support for the lifetime of the product. Servicing, spare parts and retrofitting are all available too.
