In this collaboration with British Recycled Plastic based in Mytholmroyd, we’re highlighting six popular products that would improve facilities at cricket clubs, make life easier for volunteers and keep plastic waste out of landfill.
Denholme and Bradshaw
The Denholme Picnic Table is the best-selling, flagship recycled plastic table that seats four adults or six children.
Made in the UK from the equivalent of 5,888 one pint milk containers, it’s available in a variety of colours and is a weatherproof upgrade for spectators, easy to clean and has a 25-year guarantee.
The Bradshaw Wheelchair Accessible Picnic Table allows wheelchair users the same space as those sitting with them who are able-bodied.
You can choose the colour and number of wheelchair spaces in this cutout design that is considerate for visitors and accessible.
Like all British Recycled Plastic products, the picnic tables (5 for 4 Offer) won’t rot, split or splinter, are safe to disinfect, graffiti resistant and each table keeps its equivalent waste out of landfill.
Calder Picnic Table
This heavy-duty, eight-seater is available in black, brown or a variety of colours (on a black frame). It is made in the UK from plastic waste and is a popular choice for beer gardens, picnic areas or playgrounds.
There is also a circular wheelchair-accessible version too.
Brimham Square Picnic Table
The Brimham XL square picnic table seats up to eight people and is available with one or two spaces for wheelchair users.
It’s been dubbed a ‘good allrounder’ (and which cricket club doesn’t need those?!) including the Brimham’s ‘walkthrough’ design which means you don’t have to swing a leg over the seating to gain access.
Batley Walkthrough Picnic Table
Like the Brimham, the Batley Walkthrough Picnic Table is designed with those in wheelchairs in mind as well as anyone with mobility issues.
The X-frame table means everyone can walk right to their seat rather than lifting legs over the top. There’s room for walking sticks and they come in a range of colours from black or brown to red or rainbow.
Harewood Bench
The Harewood Bench is bought by cricket clubs looking to increase their seating capacity (see our Settle story), with its classic look a common sight at grounds.
Each moulded bench with backrest is made from 100% recycled plastic and is fully recyclable. Buy in black, brown or coloured slats on black legs.
While longevity and the ease of maintenance appealed to Settle, they also told me that visually, it was hard to tell the difference between these and wooden alternatives, so they blend in well (alongside the environmental benefits).
Skipton Bench
The Skipton Bench is slatted (without backrest) which allows water to run off and could act as seating against the wall of a building or in a cricket club’s changing room.
Available in black, brown or a wide range of colours on black frames, this is an elegant solution that is also stackable and compact.
Walsden Cricket Club
Walsden Cricket & Bowling Club bought several benches (Harewood in brown) and picnic tables for the ground and bowling green.
Chris Barker told me: “Both of these products are excellent quality, look great, are reasonably comfortable to sit on and most importantly are very long lasting.”
As a Community Asset Sports Club (CASC), Walsden were successful in a grant bid from the National Lottery Community Fund which is allowing them to create a safe community corner on the ground, comprising more benches and picnic tables, an astro turf play area and protective netting.
Lots of cricket clubs have wooden benches and Walsden have made the switch themselves to recycled plastic for practical as well as environmental reasons.
Chris said: “We have had very many wooden products / benches over the years, but all sadly have a relatively short life and do need ongoing maintenance.
The BRP benches, with their 25-year guarantee, are excellent in that they will last much longer and retain their shape and colour for a long time.”
The sports club are in the process of gradually replacing the older wooden benches with British Recycled Plastic alternatives. Part of the appeal is saving volunteer time. Plastic benches need little to no maintenance so that’s one job chalked off.
As I wrote about with Settle Cricket Club, these benches (with plaques) are a great way to remember those from the community who have passed. It’s a physical spot, associated with the cricket, to visit a loved one and the cost can be partly spread.
Walsden are looking to introduce more of the Harewood benches at their Scott Street HQ in the Calderdale village.
Meanwhile, the Lancashire League outfit, who have Pakistan Test player Sajid Khan as their professional for 2024, look forward to a busy season across their teams.
With four senior sides and juniors from under nines to under eighteens, including a squad in the Lancashire Cricket Foundation Girls U11 competition, there’s lots going on.
Their Millennium Suite (which seats a hundred guests) is available for hire and with senior nets back at Cricket Asylum and gigs like the Freddie Mercury Tribute, it’s all gearing up nicely at Walsden.
