In this content collaboration with total-play Ltd, we’ll look at how cricket clubs and schools can refurbish a non-turf match pitch or outdoor net facility.
Not everyone has the need or budget to build a brand-new non-turf practice facility – though we’ve highlighted examples of total-play nets installations here on the website over the years.
At some point, materials need replacing – particularly with the impact over years of these sites being outdoors in all-weather – but a refurbishment can be a very cost-effective solution.
It might be your club or school is a past customer of total-play Ltd and by cleaning, replacing like-for-like or upgrading surfaces, the artificial cricket pitch or outdoor cricket nets look as good as new.
They’re happy to advise and support any organisations with cricket facilities that need a new lease of life.
Refurbishment of non-turf cricket facilities
Lifecycle Maintenance – as it’s known by total-play – includes a whole host of upgrades depending on what needs repairing and the budget available.
- Playing surfaces
- Netting systems
- Flood or vandalism damage
A worn playing surface can be a trip hazard and cause uneven ball bounce, likewise holes in netting are frustrating, not the best experience and perhaps dangerous.
If a facility is considered not to meet Performance Quality Standards (PQS), this could lead to litigation following an accident.
Any damaged non-turf surfaces, whether through wear over time, floods or vandalism to name a few, need a standard of refurbishment that hits certain benchmarks.
total-play will visit your cricket ground and do a test to measure against England & Wales (ECB) standards and guidelines. Results are immediate and can be observed by the client, after which there can be a maintenance plan put in place.
The complexity and cost of repairs and refurbishments will vary across sites because of how the original was installed, the materials used and the degree of damage.
Quality and expertise with total-play
What you get with total-play is an ECB-approved supplier that has many years of designing, building and maintaining top-quality cricket practice facilities and artificial match pitches.
Their own products have been thought through to include deeper aggregate base, higher grade steelwork for netting frames and full-width carpet to minimise maintenance.
Not all non-turf practice facilities are the same but broadly, one with a better base construction and quality components will need less maintenance and ultimately be less expensive to repair.
With upgrading outdoor cricket nets, it might be removing old carpets, re-levelling and compacting the existing sub-base then replacing the shock pads and playing surface.
Equally, if you’re interested in bringing your artificial / non-turf match pitch back to life then that’s possible too – but sometimes more complicated if it was originally installed by a non-ECB approved supplier.

Case study: Sherfield School
At Sherfield School in Hampshire, the total-play team installed a 3-lane, ECB-approved non-turf cricket nets facility in 2016.
A refurbishment project in 2024 put in new HD Protection Tunnel Netting, PVC protection skirts and batting curtains. The carpets were also brushed and creases re-marked.
This sets up the facility for its second decade of use and is a great option for those who have a total-play facility already or who need an experienced supplier to manage an upgrade.
Repair or replace?
As with the Northwood Cricket Club project in the YouTube video above, the total-play team can refurbish and add features:
- Renovation to existing base constructions
- Installing up-to-date, modern shock pads and playing surface carpets
- Replacing existing netting with bespoke net protection systems
- Installing new metal frameworks
From Sunbury to Penrith, cricket clubs and schools across the country routinely use total-play to update their cricket facilities.
