In this content collaboration with Bespoke Scoreboards, we are looking at a common question they have been asked over the past year.
Daktronics scoreboards were a popular option for cricket clubs and they have been installed across the UK.
Bespoke Scoreboards get requests from cricket clubs who have a Daktronics scoreboard / electrical components to adapt or replace their set-up. With that in mind, we thought it would be helpful to share examples of three ways a cricket club can get support.
Bespoke Scoreboards are a Leeds-based family business who offer custom solutions for cricket clubs all over the country. They combine decades of experience in electronics with the know-how to build scoreboards or adapt them.

Option 1 – Early Daktronics scoreboards
Some cricket clubs have an early Daktronics model with the electro-mechanical flip-over digits. The advantage to the clubs here is that they can reuse the scoreboard housings that they already have, saving over £1,000.
Barwick in Elmet Cricket Club had an old Daktronics scoreboard that was, in their own words, great but becoming increasing temperamental hence the need to replace it.
They wanted something that could retrofit into the existing enclosure but also with similar operating features, so users wouldn’t notice much difference.
Raymond Budd shared his thoughts on working with Bespoke:
“We found the Bespoke Scoreboards product really met the needs of what we were looking for.
As a club, we were quite specific in our requirements and the team were helpful in planning the installation. This meant that when install day arrived, it was very timely without any problems.”
Scoreboard upgrade aside, Barwick in Elmet are faring well. Both first and second XI won promotion in the first year they moved to Yorkshire Premier League North after senior competition in the Wetherby League ceased.
They have a vibrant junior and social side and cropped up in an article I did recently due to their link-up with Trinity Academy Leeds school.
Option 2 – Keep the digits and replace the electronics
Some clubs want to keep their existing scoreboard digits but swap out the electronics. Clubs like North Leeds, Toft and Hollinsend have all done this with Bespoke Scoreboards, as have others.
The upgrade meant that there was access to scoring using either of the Play Cricket Scorer apps, and being able to display DLS on the scoreboards.
To learn more, I was in touch with Richard Wells, Chair at Hollinsend Methodist CC.
“We had a problem with the Daktronic board so enquired about an upgrade to allow it to be used in conjunction with the Play-Cricket scoring app. Daktronics no longer provide such an upgrade.”
They did get a part from Daktronics to solve the initial issue and then assembled an internal team of electrician and programmer to try and make the upgrade. When that wasn’t possible, they needed some help:
“Bespoke have made the changes needed, provided a new control board and we now have a scoreboard able to work with Play-Cricket & perhaps in the future live streaming of our matches.”
Steve Wales is Chairman at North Leeds Cricket Club. He told me: “The switch from our previous supplier to M Jay Electronics Ltd was a no-brainer and the best thing we have done in relation to our electronic scoreboard.”
He added: “They are based in Yorkshire and not the other side of the country, so repairs, spares or callouts are very local, they have always come up with solutions and new ideas to make us more effective in the way we display our scoreboards.”
Option 3 – Just replace the digits
Some clubs just need replacement digits for their cricket scoreboard. Bolton Villas Cricket Club (above), who play in the Aire-Wharfe Cricket League, kept their internal Daktronics electronics and controller – but replaced all their digits for new ones from Bespoke.
It’s the quickest, most affordable upgrade if the scoreboard is working fine but perhaps the numbers aren’t bright enough or got damaged by a few booming sixes.
It’s just two screws to remove the digit from the front of the scoreboard and a cable to unplug.
So… three options for your club to consider if a scoreboard upgrade is on your radar in future.
