Yorkshire club cricket is blessed with every cup competition you could possibly imagine. Inter-league, one-off contests, historic silverware and innovations only a year or two old.
Unless your club is fortunate to contest national ECB contests then often you’ll only be playing against those in your league.
North versus South
Which brings us to the K3 Dental Knock-Out Cup. This is North vs South. Premier Leagues. Forty overs. Coloured clothing. Some of the best club sides in Yorkshire.
I can’t help but think that having a cup referencing a dental knockout backed by a dentist in Barnsley is ingenious. K3 Cosmetic Dental Studio have sponsored what is the Yorkshire Leagues Knock-Out Cup for two years now.
Previous winners in recent years are Castleford (2023), Woodhouse Grange (2022) and Appleby Frodingham (2021).
It sees the twelve Premier League sides from the Yorkshire Premier League North face those from the Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League.
This season, we had two rounds on 5 May and 9 June which led to quarter-finals of Barnsley Woolley Miners vs Cawthorne, Wakefield Thornes vs Castleford, Sheffield Collegiate vs Harrogate and Scarborough vs Appleby Frodingham.
On 4 August, a one-wicket win for Cawthorne at Shaw Lane was marshalled by a destructive 88 off 56 balls by Archie Greaves.
Elsewhere, Sheffield Collegiate eased past Harrogate by five wickets at home, Scarborough dismantled Appleby Frodingham by 118 runs at North Marine Road and Castleford bowled out Wakefield Thornes for a 27-run away victory.

Top performers
Clarke Doughney (Scarborough, above) averages 99.5 in the K3 Dental Cup with his 111 against Appleby Frodingham the only century this season so far.
With the ball, Danish Aziz (Cawthorne) averages 7.7 with Doughney also in the top three (7 wickets @ 14).
Attempting to tease out trends and the top sides is generally folly until we get down to the brass tacks of semi-finals and finals.
What I can say with some certainty is that anyone can have a sparkling cup run that defies their league position – and never under-estimate the underdog.
Going on a cup run
This year, Scarborough (9th in Yorkshire Premier League North) are blazing a trail while the Southern semi-finalists Sheffield Collegiate are seventh and Cawthorne eighth at the time of writing.
Castleford are defending cup champions and also riding high in the league (second behind Clifton Alliance) but these are one-off showpieces where anyone can have a blinder so it sets up the next knockout ties nicely.
The final of the K3 Dental Cup will be played at Shaw Lane, Barnsley on Sunday 8 September with a reserve date of a week later.
Semi-finals – Sunday 18 August @ 12.30pm
🏆 Sheffield Collegiate vs Scarborough
🏆 Cawthorne vs Castleford
