After a season of LBWs, run outs, unplayable deliveries, huge sixes, drama and tension, many of Yorkshire’s cricket leagues have now been decided.
Commiserations if your team is destined for a lower division in 2025. With luck and a fair wind, you’ll bounce back next year.
But there are those who have not only won but won handsomely. I’ve picked out a selection of worthy achievements (there will be many more out there)…
20/20 Vision for Coal Aston
Coal Aston 1st XI have gone an entire season without losing a game. No draws, all wins and most of them by whopping amounts.
Their promotion to Division One of the Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League came after a 196-run victory away at Hatfield Town.
The side, captained by Ben Hall, won 20 games out of 20; a remarkable run that combines performance and a slab of luck that not one fixture was ruined by the weather, home or away.
Sessay Emeralds go undefeated
On 8 September, Sessay Emeralds defeated rivals Wrenthorpe by 169 runs to win the Yorkshire Women & Girls Cricket League.
By all accounts, they have been mighty impressive, undefeated across the league season. Olivia Gain has excelled with 1,114 runs for her club (across all competitions) including six hundreds. The Emeralds headed into The Hundred Finals day at Headingley on Sunday 15 September with confidence. (They beat Sheffield Collegiate but the rest of the day was washed out).
Double Trouble: Thornton
Thornton Cricket Club 1st XI have claimed the league and cup double in 2024. The ENCO Halifax League Premier Division side achieved this mighty landmark with two games to spare.
Their standards are slipping though after going undefeated in all competitions and winning the treble in 2023. (Just kidding 🤣)
Eight players have come through Thornton’s junior system, seven of which have only ever played for the village.
Last league & cup doubles
The Scarborough Beckett Cricket League is merging into Yorkshire Premier League North for 2025 so this season’s club performances have a keen sense of history to them.
A last chapter before a new one opens, if you will.
For Staxton, Sherburn 2nd XI, Cloughton and Staithes 2nd XI, they have achieved a league and cup double in the last-ever Scarborough Beckett Cricket League season.
Congratulations to all clubs featured here and all those who’ve won a league or cup (or both) in 2024.
