Mark Doherty reports from Harrogate on the Yorkshire Boys Regional Cricket programme and watches an U15 North vs South fixture.
The bank holiday at Harrogate Cricket Club offered a competitive regional fixture on Monday afternoon. The Under-15 Yorkshire Regional match between the North and South brought together some of the county’s most promising young players, many of whom are already part of Yorkshire’s wider county age-group pathway.
As the game got underway, I spoke with Jack Stockdale, Cricket Operations Manager for the Boys Pathway Programme at Yorkshire County Cricket Club. He gave me an insight into how the regional structure is designed to bridge the gap between various age groups and levels.

Jack described the regional B sides as largely made up of younger Under 13 and 14-year-old players competing against strong opposition as part of their development.
The regional teams effectively serve as a stepping stone toward the county age-group squads, giving players an opportunity to experience a higher standard of cricket while being assessed for future progression.
The standard on display quickly justified that description. Chatting with a few spectators around the boundary, there was a common theme about the high quality of the fielding, game awareness and shot selection, with the young players showing both composure and a tactical awareness often associated with more senior cricket, rather than youth matches.

North Region, batting first, built their innings steadily after a measured opening spell. Alfred Walker was one of the early anchors of the innings, reaching a composed half-century as the home side batted with a real assuredness. Alfred was to go on to score 62 before being bowled by Alexander Kemp.
At 174 for five after 40 overs, North Region had already established a strong innings score on what was a very good batting surface at Harrogate Cricket Club’s main oval.
The final five overs saw North Region accelerate impressively, with Jishnu Kant racing through his half century as the innings gathered momentum; Jishnu being the standout batsman finishing on an unbeaten 70 runs from just 59 balls. North Region eventually closed on 231 for six from their 45 overs, a big total for South Region to chase.

South Region’s reply began positively enough, but wickets falling at regular intervals prevented any sustained momentum from developing. At 93 for four after 23 overs, the game still appeared evenly balanced, with the required rate manageable, if a partnership could be formed.
However, North Region tightened their grip during the second half of the chase. The score slipped to 107 for six after 27 overs and then 115 for seven two overs later, leaving the lower order facing an increasingly difficult task against disciplined bowling and sharp fielding.
The innings eventually closed on 125 all out in 34 overs, the final wicket falling to a run out as the North Region completed a convincing victory by 106 runs.

The standout batsmen for South Region were William Kerry who scored 19 from 51 deliveries; Mohammed Hasnain who scored 17 from 26; Charles Lawrence who got 17 from 43 deliveries; and Oliver Perry who got 11 from 18. North Region’s Henry Meade was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets for just 17 runs.
Beyond the result, the afternoon demonstrated the depth of talent moving through Yorkshire cricket’s development system.
Played in warm spring sunshine at Harrogate, the match combined competitive cricket with an important stage in the county pathway, and for many of the players involved, it may prove to be a step toward much bigger opportunities in the years ahead.
