Not even a rare soggy Saturday could dampen the enthusiasm at sampling Ripon Cricket Club’s award-winning cricket teas. Having won the Cricket Yorkshire Cricket Tea of the Year 2022 the previous week, our visit to Ripon to deliver Bettys vouchers from our competition sponsor Yorkshire Tea was one
I’d put a call out on social media a couple of weeks ago to find out what women’s games were on that week, as the weather had been poor and quite a few weekend fixtures were in real doubt. About a week later, Paul Priestley popped a reply
Visiting cricket grounds and sites of famous battles. Would that combo work for you? I gave it a shot last week: Saxton Cricket Club (Foss Evening League, Division Four) and the Battle of Towton (1461); Northallerton Town Cricket Club (North Yorkshire & South Durham Premier League, Collingwood Hundred, Round One)
Saturday arrived and I had planned the relative short trip to Hampsthwaite Cricket Club, situated in a small village a stone’s throw from Killinghall, with both villages on the north side of Harrogate. The blue sky was showing in patches, threatening nice weather, but it was also a bit
When it came to choosing Saturday’s fixture, several components slotted into place like Tetris. I figured my first ENCO Halifax Cricket League game this season was overdue. (Subsequent apologies to Stainland, I have a memory like a sieve). The prospect of Thornton 1st XI, last year’s treble-winning
On Sunday 2 June in the Quaid-e-Azam Cricket League Premiership, there was an extraordinary club cricket match. Salem Athletic won the toss and opted to have a bat in their 40-over match against Panyam. Opener Haris Khan blasted 297 off 113 balls at the top of the
Wednesday night means Harrogate & District Amateur Evening Cricket League action. Working on a client photo and video project during the day, I had left it much too late to travel anywhere with any element of choice, so I scrolled through the Play-Cricket app to find the nearest game.
An invite to watch the Chance to Shine Street Finals for Yorkshire at Bradford Park Avenue proved to be an extraordinary day. Chance to Shine’s Street programme gives young people (between the ages of eight and 24) the opportunity to enjoy free tapeball cricket sessions in their local communities.
Over the past decade, my coverage of grassroots women’s cricket has been, let’s be totally honest, poor. I have got to games, but infrequently and usually put to one side because of commercial pressures to cover county or international men’s and women’s cricket instead. This season,
The search for Saturday’s venue started earlier in the week than has been the norm throughout the start of 2024, as the weather has been remarkably well behaved. The ongoing A59 road closures meant that cricket clubs heading over towards Skipton and beyond will be considered later on in
“It’s a long walk for a duck!” The words of Luddendenfoot opener Harry Denham after his first over dismissal at Upper Hopton Cricket Club’s Sutcliffe Memorial Ground. Playing in a Halifax League Parish Cup second-round tie, Denham had almost scaled the summit of a taxing, 45-step
The Cricket Yorkshire Tea of the Year, sponsored by Yorkshire Tea, has been fantastic fun to do for a second time. We’ve been humbled by the quality of your club cricket teas from across Yorkshire, as well as the stories of those who make, bake and brew. There were
Sunday’s fixtures were pretty much decimated due to the torrential downpour that raced through Yorkshire overnight Saturday. Attempts to get to my first women’s cricket fixture this season were put on hold as the games at Clifton Alliance and Sessay both fell to waterlogged grounds. With the amount
Saturday arrived and I had decided to make the relatively short trip to Whixley, a small village halfway between York and Harrogate, just off the A59. Whixley has a great pub, The Anchor, and if you happen to be passing at any point, I can wholeheartedly recommend the carvery they
It’s funny how you can re-visit something familiar with fresh eyes and see it in an entirely different light. On Saturday, I opted to visit the closest club to Cricket Yorkshire HQ and headed to Wagon Lane; home to Bradford & Bingley Cricket Club. I do dip in
It is always good to visit a cricket club then learn about encouraging developments. Very much the case when a Thursday found me at Thornton-le-Moor Cricket Club, to watch a game against Ingleby Cross in the tiny Northallerton & District Evening League. With just seven members (the others
